The Sense of Smell
(0)
Disturbed vibrations occur in the body as a precursor of illness. Vibrational healing restores the body’s healthy vibrations. Essential oils can be used to balance the subtle energy flows in the body.
We are surrounded by vibrations at all times. Our ears are tuned to receive sound vibrations, our eyes focus on vibrations of light which allow us to see colour, and our noses detect vibrations of aromatic molecules which allow us to become aware of scents. The most important ingredient in the Aromatherapy treatment is the essential oil.
Aromatherapists and perfumeries use musical language to describe scents. We talk of essential oils being a top, middle, and base note. About a century ago, a perfumery named Piesse arranged scents on a stave, or musical scale, and this went some way to describing the vibration of scents.
Aromas were also described by colour. Scents can be described as ‘green’ or ‘blue’ or perhaps ‘vivid red’, and we mix scents as we would, colour on an artist’s palette.
Historically, the sense of smell has always been important to man and to his survival. A newborn baby recognises his mother mainly by scent until his eyesight improves and he learns to focus.
To early man, his sense of smell was every bit as important as what it is to animals. Humans and animals alike emit pheromones (from the Greek ‘pherein’ to carry and ‘hormon’ to excite) which attract, repel, identify or mark territory.
Human pheromones are chemicals manufactured by the apocrine glands and radiated into the air around us. The scent of these are detected by the people in our immediate vicinity and play a large part in sexual attraction. Although we are all radiate pheromones and react to other people’s pheromones, this function takes place on a subconscious level.
As the pheromones we produce are affected by fluctuations in other hormone levels, they can indicate our emotional state. For instance, the surge of adrenalin produced in times of anxiety can produce a smell of fear. Animals are highly receptive to scents and can easily detect emotion in humans.
Apocrine glands are also located on the soles of the feet and pheromone molecules can remain on the ground for up to two weeks. Primitive tribes have, until comparatively recently, detected the proximity of other people by sniffing the ground.
It is only the process of ‘civilisation’ that has blunted our sense of smell and with it our innate knowledge that scents produce profound responses within us.
Although early man used his sense of smell for survival and reproduction in much the same way as other animals, our present culture pays little attention to the sense of smell in its natural, emotional, feeling sense. We mainly use the sense of smell in a cosmetic way. Spraying and powdering ourselves to remove or mask our natural scents. We have for so long subdued our senses by the constraints of reason and the rational mind, that we have lost touch with our spiritual nature. We no longer give freedom to the inner, unseen realms of the mind and the subtle communications of the psyche.
The importance of the effects of scents on the human psyche has been gradually eroded. At one time, incense was burned on temple altars on a daily basis (it is still used today as an important part of some religious services); fragrant herbs and flowers were strewn on the floor of a dwelling. Odours were often associated with illness and disease. An evil smell was so much a part of the plague that it was believed to be one of the earliest symptoms. It had an odour that was foul and distinctive. The breath of plague victims was described by physicians of the time as that of ‘rotten flesh’ or ‘corrupt cadavers’.
Because breathing in the foul stench was thought to be one of the methods of contracting the disease, those who were still healthy carried nosegays and pomanders of highly perfumed flowers and spices. By holding these to the nose they believed that they were warding off infection carried in the venomous air. In the Middle Ages, and even later, pleasant smells were considered to be an important part of good health and immunity to disease. During the 1348 plague, French physicians prescribed breathing in cold aromatics like roses, sandalwood, renuphar, vinegar, rose-water, camphor and chilled apples for summertime protection. And in the winter, hot aromatics like aloe, amber, sweetgum and nutmeg.
Another physician prescribed that “The heart must be eased by external bathing and internally with syrups and other medicines. All such preparations must contain some perfume and some aroma, like the fragrance of the lemon tree, syrup of apples and lemons and the acid of pomegranate”. Another recommended that the house and the body should be kept clean; the rooms of the house should be ventilated, sprinkled with vinegar and filled with scented flowers and plants. It should be “perfumed with good smells. So let vine leaves, sweet rushes, willow and osier, small plants and leaves of the lemon tree and all other green things like flowers and sweet-smelling pommes be strewn throughout and placed in the corners and on the walls of the chambers”.
Unfortunately, the bodily cleanliness did not include the use of water. In fact, washing and bathing was considered a dangerous practice at times, as it opened the pores and allowed the odorous, plague-ridden air to enter the body more easily. The hands and face were cleansed with aromatic lotions and frequent changes of clothing, with abundant use of perfumes, were considered to be indispensable. Physicians recommended that their bodies be washed in tepid vinegar twice a day.
There was also thought to be an odour of sanctity, saints and mystics were considered to emanate sweet odours of violets, roses, cinnamon and cloves. This sweet odour was noted even after death and remains of saints were alleged to have given off sweet floral odours many years after death. Pope Benedict XIV stated “That the human body may by nature not have an overtly unpleasant odour is possible, but that it should actually have a pleasing smell – that is beyond nature. If such an agreeable odour exists, whether there does or does not exist a natural cause capable of producing it, it must be owing to some higher course and thus deemed to be miraculous”. Therefore the pleasant odour of the saint is seen as evidence of sanctity.
Throughout the ages, scents and odours have had a deep and profound effect on the human psyche. Suskind says “For scent was a brother breath. Together with breath it entered human beings who could not defend themselves against it, not if they wanted to live. And scent entered into their very core, went directly to their hearts and decided for good and all between affection and contempt, disgust and lust, love and hate, the who ruled scent ruled the hearts of men.”

There is something to be said about fast food being more convenient then healthy food that helps you be thin. I will give you that. But wait, how about this. Convenient when? It is definitely convenient now. How about later, when you don’t have enough energy to do anything but go to sleep? Or when you cannot focus because all you feel like doing is taking a nap. Or is it more convenient when you have indigestion and heartburn and don’t feel like doing anything?
We live in a world of now. A world of cause and effect. But the problem is that most people only look at immediate cause and immediate effect. Not fully realizing the body does not work on an instantaneous process. If you put something in your mouth, it can take hours to process the food, even days if your system is not working so good. So when people get heart burn, or are tired, or get headaches they often miss the fact that it may have been something other than what happened immediately before.
You cannot “save time”. You can only spend it wisely. And no matter how convenient it may seem at the time, food that is “fast” never saves you time in the long run. This is also a little trick that is interesting and works everywhere in your life. The solution to why it seems like there is never “enough time.” It is because we falsely believe we are doing things that save time. Almost everything you do to “save time” only ends up costing you more time. If you eat fast food because you are in a rush, you will lose at least double the time later you supposedly saved.
How much time is wasted because you have no energy to do what you want at the end of the day? How much time is wasted because you don’t feel like doing anything? How much time do you spend not feeling ready to go? How much time do you spend being unproductive because of brain fog? These are the type of things that your body does when you eat fast food to “save time”. And these are only the semi-immediate effects. Later in life your body starts doing all kinds of things that slow you down and don’t allow you to do everything you want. This is in a large part due to what you put into your body. Because as you remember, if you try and build a brick house with rocks and stones, sooner or later it will fall apart.

We like to think of our homes as being a safe place to be–a refuge from
a dangerous world. Yet some of the exposures that you have
day-to-day that are most hazardous to your health and the health of
your family happen right at home.
The good news is that for every toxic product you’ll find in your home,
there is a safer alternative. You just need to know where to look for
those toxic exposures and what safe solutions are available.
Here are ten common toxic exposures most Americans have in their
homes, and some simple, inexpensive things everyone can do to reduce
household toxics.
1. Save yourself from exposure to toxic ammonia by washing your
windows with vinegar and water. Ammonia can cause irritation of the
eyes and respiratory tract, and burn your skin. Instead, mix distilled
white or apple cider vinegar half-and-half with water in a spray bottle.
Squirt on windows and wipe with recycled newspapers for a streak-free
super shine.
2. Free yourself from toxic formaldehyde exposure by sleeping on
untreated cotton sheets. Formaldehyde exposure can cause
insomniayes, insomniaand respiratory problems, among other
symptoms. Bypass formaldehyde-coated polyester/cotton sheets and
no-iron cotton sheets and choose cozy cotton flannel sheets or
untreated cotton percale sheets, both available at major department
stores and online.
3. Put up a detector to protect your family from carbon monoxide
exposure. Carbon monoxide starves the body and brain of oxygen and
can be fatal. First symptoms include sleepiness, headache, dizziness,
flushed skin, and disorientation. All homes with gas appliances or
heaters should install carbon monoxide detectors, available in most
hardware and home improvement stores or on-line.
4. Replace toxic mothballs with sweet sachets. Mothballs are made from
100 percent paradichlorobenzene, a volatile toxic chemical that can
cause headaches and severe irritation to nose, throat and lungs. Over
time it can cause liver and kidney damage. Because the balls look like
candy, they are a very attractive poison to children. Protect your
woolens from moths by making sachets from dried lavender, equal parts
dried rosemary and mint, or whole peppercorns. Cedar products are
also effective moth repellants.
5. Use soap-based cleaning products instead of poisonous detergent.
While detergents seem safe, they are a petrochemical-based product
that is responsible for more household poisonings than any other
substance. Soap, on the other hand, is made from natural oils and
minerals and has been safely used for centuries. Natural and organic
soap-based products can be found in natural food stores and online.
6. Refill your own non-plastic water bottle instead of using toxic plastic
water bottles. While it’s good for your health to carry your own water
and drink it throughout the day, if it’s in a clear polycarbonate plastic
bottle, it is leaching a toxic substance into your water–even if the bottle
is sitting on table at room temperature. Bisphenol-A. BPA is a potent
hormone disruptor that can impair the reproductive organs and have
adverse effects on breast tissue and prostate development. Drink from
a glass bottle or carry an aluminum or steel bottle, available online.
7. Avoid toxic pesticides by making dinner using fresh, organically-grown
produce. Most food sold in supermarkets are sprayed heavily with
pesticides, many of which cause cancer. Find out where to buy
pesticide-free organically grown food in your community, go there and
purchase what looks good and is in season. One taste and you’ll go
back for more. A great variety of organically-grown food can also be
ordered on-line.
8. Wash away petrochemical perfumes and take a botanical bath. Many
commercial bath products contain detergents and artificial fragrances
that can be irritating to sensitive areas. You can have a luxurious
relaxing bath by adding natural substances to warm bathwater, such as
fragrant dried or fresh herbs (try lavender, rosemary, or peppermint), a
quart of buttermilk, or 1 cup Epsom salts. For bubbles, use a natural or
organic soap, available in natural food stores and online.
9. Get some color in your life without toxic solvents by choosing colorful
water-based pens and markers. Check through your pens and markers
and throw away any with “permanent” ink. They contain very toxic
volatile solvents such as toluene and xylene. Every office discount
warehouse and art supply store I have been to carries water-based
pens and markers in every size and color.
10. Clear the air with a couple of houseplants. In addition to being
beautiful to look at, houseplants also freshen the air by absorbing the
carbon dioxide we exhale and releasing the oxygen that is vital for us to
breathe. Some plants, such as the popular spider plant, also remove
some air pollutants.

Back-to-Nature Aromatherapy
Back-to-nature is a new health initiative by people living in modern society. Aromatherapy, which stems from natural plants, has also became a favourite in modern day living. Ancient medical healers use essential oils to heal people’s bodies and aroma to soothe their spirits. As whiffs of fragrance drift through the ages of time, people living in modern society have even made use of the latest scientific research to develop the unlimited potential and precious deposits of essential oils, so as to improve the environment, enhance healthiness and beautify the spirit.
Aromatherapy comes from the essence of natural flora and enters the human body though the air and the olfactory nerves. From there, it goes though the central nerves into our brains and, tapping on the characteristics of plants hormones, it is able to deliver beneficial effects to the body, such as the lungs, blood, emotional nerves, immune system and even aid in psychological aspects such as the alleviation or pacification of problems like depression.
Aromatherapy uses a simple natural method to kill bacteria and increase nutrients in the air that we breathe. At the same time, aromatherapy is able to allow the surrounding environment to create anions which are extremely good for the human body. Different plant fragrances will create different feelings and responses in our body. Aromatherapy uses the characteristics of plant essential oils to improve the health and balance between complexion, body, cognition and spirit, so as to achieve a state where the body, heart and spirit become one.
The Genie of Aroma – Plant Essential Oils
All plants will go though photosynthesis where the cells will secrete aromatic molecules. These molecules will assemble into aromatic pouches dispersed on the petals, leaves or branches. After extracting these aromatic pouches, we will get what we term as plant essential oils.
The essential oils used by aromatherapy can be said to be the hormones of plants. They have the same building components and life energy as human beings. Essential oils are made from the amalgamation of different kind of molecules. These molecules exist together, in a beautiful proportion. As molecules are very fine and have a high penetration ability, they can effectively enter the body and not leave behind any toxins. According to research, pure plant essential oils will not be like chemical pharmaceuticals that remain in the body. They will utilise the body’s excretory system such as urine, perspiration and breathing to purge out of the body. If the usage is correct, natural essential oils will have no side effects.
The natural aroma of plant essential oils, after entering into the brain via the olfactory nerves, is able to stimulate the frontal brain to secrete some hormones, so as to give a most comfortable state of mind. This is the best way to protect the spirit. One is also able to group different essential oils together to blend an aroma to one’s liking. This will not damage the characteristics of essential oils and will even empower their functions.
The basic characteristics of essential oils can prevent contagious diseases and fight bacteria, pathogens and moulds. They can also prevent inflammation and convulsion as well as enhance cellular metabolism and regenerating abilities, making life even better. These essential oils can also regulate the inner secretion organs, enhancing the secretion of hormones and enabling the physiological and psychological activities of the body to develop well. Essential oils can even relax the nerves, enhance blood circulation, reduce depression, make one happier and enable cognition and psychology to reach a harmonious state.
Enjoy a “Forest Bath” at Home with Phytoncidere
The word phyton comes from a Latin word which means a kind of plant, while the word cidere means “to kill”. Russian biologist, Professor Dunkinn, discovered that certain plans emit a substance known as “phytoncidere” when damaged. Phytoncidere, present in all plants, kill other living things in their surroundings. If living organisms such as amoeba of flu, cholera or diphtheria germs are placed near to freshly chopped leaves, the germ will be killed after a few minutes. Hence, it is apparent that plants have a self-immunity function which eliminate bacteria and fungi.
The Functions of Phytoncidere:
1. Eliminates bacteria.
2. Purifies air of pollutants to ensure smoother breathing for greater vitality.
3. Enters the body via the nasal passage to fight diseases and maintain physical and mental balance.
Scientific Research of Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a method that premises on the absorption of active materials to heal, alleviate and prevent various diseases and contagion. It can activate vigorous elements in the body to fight all pathogen elements, achieving the effect of healing and boosting of the immune system.
Aroma psychology that arises out of “Aroma Healing Studies” is a science that specifically examines the psychological state and inner responses that occur when one inhales perfume. It uses experiments and the results of various measuring instruments to prove the effects of aromatherapy. It is able to present the research results in a quantitative manner and enable aromatherapy to go the way of science.
Vitamin in The Air – Anion
Dr. Jacob, a biological science lecturer at the Public Health School at Harvard University, describes anion as “Vitamin in the air”. Cation can cause headache, discomfort and increase blood pressure, whereas anion can decease blood pressure. An experiment can show that if a patient with high blood pressure inhales anion, his blood pressure will decrease and so will his pulse rate.
Effects of Anion:
1. Respiratory system: anions can enhance the fine hair activities in the nose sticky membrane, windpipe and bronchus sticky membrane; elevate the expansion of smooth muscles; help in the elimination of phlegmatic liquids; soothe the sensitive reactions of the respiratory system and is especially helpful to nose sensitivity.
2. Blood circulation system: lowers blood pressure, slows the heart rate, reduces the precipitation speed of red blood cells, lengthens the time for blood to coagulate and aids in the smooth circulation of blood.
3. Immune System: activates the dermis system function, elevates protein contents in the blood cells, hence increasing the ability to fight diseases.
4. Control bacteria in the air and reduce diseases to do with the respiratory organs.
5. Adjust and regulate the active response functions of the nervous system, hence soothing feelings of anxiety and uneasiness.
How Essential Oils Are Absorbed by the Human Body
Essential oils are absorbed by the body through two channels, the skin and the lungs. The skin is originally endowed with the functions of absorption and excretion. Essential oils molecules are very tiny and are able to penetrate into the skin and in between the lymph and cells, then spread to the blood in other parts of the body. Absorption method happens via the pulmonary alveoli in the lungs, into the surrounding capillary bloodstream and is able to release refined plant hormones into the air through aromatherapy, allowing the body to absorb quickly and achieve therapeutic benefits.
When the lungs absorb phytoncidere nutrients, it is not only healthy for the lungs, it will also forge a healthy connection between the lungs and the heart, as well as the heart and the blood vessels. So, after the lungs absorb this large amount of nutrients, it will send these nutrients to the heart, and the heart will then send these nutrients to the blood vessels, which will then send the nutrients to every cell in the human body!
Traditional aromatherapy uses the method of heating to allow essential oils to diffuse beneficial nutrients into the human body. To open up the path of healthcare and health science, the first step is to be acquainted with the functions of healthcare. This involves the complementation of “bio-tech aroma-vapourisation” products which Bel’Air has researched and developed. The birth of such products is another breakthrough created by Bel’Air in the research and development of its products. Aroma-vapourisation is the first key for aromatherapy to enter the domain of health science. Via this method, you do not need to place essential oil into alcohols but can directly drip a few drops onto the aroma-vapourisation base for the essential oil to diffuse. The effects will be even better. This world patented product owned by Bel’Air holds great significance and meaning for the medical world.

Time Management
Ever asked yourself, where does the time go?
It seems that this hectic lifestyle in which we live, many in internet business have the complaint, “there’s just not enough time in the day” to get all the work required done. This proves especially true with companies running their internet business like a one man band, as many do. This is why time management is an extremely important factor in producing quantitive, yet quality results, day in day out.
Research suggests that more than half of our lives (on average) is a waste of time.
* We spend 5 years standing in line. * 2 years trying to return telephone calls. * 8 months opening direct mail. * 6 years eating food. * 1 year looking for misplaced objects. * 4 years doing general household chores. * 25 years sleeping.
Out of an 80 year life span a total of 43 years are consumed with trivial, boring tasks that seem to occupy the majority of our free time. With another 20 years being consumed by work it leaves little time to the imagination if you don’t have a daily time management system in place.
So I ask you this.
How many of the 30,000 odd days of our life do you spend on the pursuit of your interests, dreams and self satisfactions?
In a business sense, our only limited resource is time. So how much money we make is a direct reflection of how we use our time.
The clock is ticking, put it to good use.
Memory & Images
The subconscious mind, more commonly referred to in the field of psychology as the unconscious mind, not only stores words and memories of a literal sense, but this generally untapped realm of the mind also has an images folder. Automatically the unconscious mind takes a capture shot and attaches it to the corresponding literal aspect of the moment.
More times than not from an internet marketing perspective, in my research, the memory that a potential client forms of a visit to your website is primarily created by the images they see, the words these images convey are autonomously sucked up by the unconscious mind to form a relevant or not so relevant memory.
This giving some stable meaning to the age old saying “a picture paints a thousand words”.
So if you were thinking before reading this article that the look and feel of your website is inconsequential or secondary to the literal content conveyed, think again!
So if you want to instil a relevant memory of your website in your visitors mind don’t overlook the power of creative imagery. If you don’t make an impression with your imagery then a not so relevant memory will be formed and filed DEEP in the shadow realms of your potential customers unconscious mind, never to be retrieved again.
Focussing The Minds Of Others In The Direction You Want
Here are a couple of quick exercises that prove a point.
Exercise #1 – Close your eyes momentarily and for the period of approximately 1 minute I want you to do try and achieve the following.
Do NOT think of a black dog for 1 minute. Do it now.
Did you have major difficulty NOT thinking of that black dog for a whole minute? No matter how hard you tried that damn black dog just kept running on into your mind right?
Exercise #2 – Close your eyes momentarily and for the period of approximately 1 minute I want you to do try and achieve the following.
I want you to think of a red rose for 1 minute. Do it now.
This task was relatively easy huh? Now to the point of the exercise..
The focusing of the red rose was relatively easy enough, the second exercise also holds the key to the first exercise of NOT focusing on the black dog. The most effective way to NOT think of something is to think of something else.
Most importantly, we need to be aware that not thinking of something actually focuses the goal oriented part of the mind on that very thing, just as effectively as if you had chosen to think of it directly.
One can observe the principle of this exercise at work very effectively when parents walk their children home from school, they tell their children NOT to jump in the puddles right? But almost as if you could set a clock by it, your kids are back doing exactly what you told them NOT to do, yep they are jumping in the puddles.
By the parent saying to their children, don’t jump in the puddles, this draws the kids attention directly to the puddles and in they go. Then the parents have the cheek to get upset at the children after they have quite effectively, if somewhat unconsciously directed them straight into the puddles.
So how do you keep your children from jumping in the puddles you ask?
Think about it for a moment. The mind is a goal orientated decision making tool, you want the mind to focus away from the puddles, where do you want the mind to go? On the dry ground of course, so the effective thing to say is “keep on the dry ground”, this focuses the mind of the child on the dry ground and not on the puddles.
Have you ever seen a child carrying a full bowl of soup? What is the natural reaction?
You shout “don’t spill the bowl of soup” right? But by doing so, what has the child’s mind registered?
Yes, you are telling him to spill the soup by focusing his mind on spilling it, then there is insult added to injury when you say “you clumsy kid, why didn’t you do what I told you”? So not only does the child feel guilty for making a mess, he or she then gets a negative affirmation as well.
So how do you get the child to NOT spill the soup? Think what do I want the child’s mind to do and the answer is “keep the soup bowl level”.
Focus the mind towards the required task, invariably this will focus their mind away from the negative result that you instilled in their mind.
This is a very powerful psychological concept that can be effectively implemented into your internet marketing campaigns. If you want your customers to do something, maybe telling them not to do it may be more effective in certain situations, definitely “food for the taught”. This approach would also help to instil one of the most powerful action emotions also, curiosity
Two very different sides to the same coin, sit and ponder on this theory for a while, think of the many possibilities and how you could make it work for you and your internet marketing campaigns.
