Poker players learn to be wary when other players bet. One must try to deduce what cards their opponents are holding. By reading the board, and analyzing betting patterns, one can make a reasonable guess at another player’s cards.

When looking at the board, the correct approach is to figure out what the best possible hand could be based on the cards showing. For instance, if there are two of a kind, then it’s possible a player has hit trips, a full house or even quads. Once you figured out what the best possible hand could be, then you compare it to your own and how the board completes your cards.

Sometimes players, especially newcomers to poker, become too fixated on reading the board to figure out what the best possible hand could be, and then assuming someone must have hit it. These players are the ones who contribute dead money to the pot because they are afraid of being ambushed on every hand. They believe every hand creates a sniper with the best cards ready to decimate the other players.

Though it is often possible a player has hit the nuts, it generally doesn’t happen every hand. Think about how the other players have bet and whether they have deviated from their usual style to deceive the table.

Be alert to snipers, but don’t adopt a mentality that every board will complete the nuts for a player every time. Sometimes the hand that shapes up to be second best, proves to be the winner at the end. Remember this when you play online poker.
