As the middle of the summer approaches, we increasingly have to deal with heat and humidity. This is not only an issue for employees but can also be a problem for customers.

During the summer, the energy supplier grid comes under increased strain as people increase their appliance use, including water coolers, air conditioning and fans. This can increase the likelihood of blackouts, especially during the busy business hours. Of course this also increases bills and emissions.

Here are some quick tips to be energy smart and to help you stay cool, green and keep some extra change in your pocket during the warm summer months.

Heating, Air Conditioning and Thermostats

- Got a programmable thermostat? Use it! Tie it to your business hours and make sure to turn everything off outside of business hours

- Make sure all A/C vents are clear of furniture and debris, this will make them more efficient

- If you have ceiling fans, try to make more use of them instead of A/C. They are far cheaper to operate

Windows & Doors

- If you have the A/C on, make sure the windows are shut

- You can control temperature with old technology too. Close blinds depending on the position of the sun.
